The five brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ernesto and Ettore Maserati had already been employed in the automobile industry, when they decided to found an own fabrication in the end of 1914. Thus the Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna came into being. In its first 20 years, the enterprise exclusively built racing cars for sports car- and Grand-Prix races. The vehicles with the trident insignia can be found among almost every line-up of the Mille Miglia throughout the years.
In the time from 1931 to 1956 various models from the car manufacturer Maserati achieved a total of 9 class victories.
